Ditching wpa_supplicant in favor of iwconfig (wireless tools port) solved my problems. Only downside is that I am unable to use WPA-PSK authentication. The original problem - one could use the wireless "pre-N" model of router for everything except getting work done via a C2S VPN - the VPN would connect just fine but you couldn't ping anything on the other side. Replacing the router solved the problem. -S-
